VDOT News - Bristol

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Abingdon Residency recently announced the promotion of Matthew Lewis to Assistant Residency Administrator.  


Lewis joined VDOT in October 2018 as the Abingdon Residency Interstate Supervisor, where his responsibilities included ensuring contract obligations between VDOT and its interstate maintenance partners were met. He also was responsible for emergency response along I-81 in Washington, Smyth and Wythe counties, and I-77 in Bland and Wythe counties.

Prior to joining VDOT, Lewis worked for Pillar, Inc., from 2013-2018 as a contract employee to VDOT. He worked as a roadway maintenance monitor in Wythe and Carroll counties on I-81 and I-77 and was later promoted to maintenance manager.


In his new role as VDOT Abingdon Assistant Residency Administrator, Lewis will assist the residency administrator in overseeing the residency’s $22 million maintenance budget and the residencies 80 employees, 5 facilities and contracted maintenance for I-81 and I-77 within the Bristol District.


The Abingdon Residency services over 4,900 lane miles of roads, including over 500 lane miles of interstate highway.  

Lewis is a 2000 graduate of Chilhowie High School and has a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Theology from Belle Meadows Baptist College in Bristol. Lewis and his wife, Lindsay, have two children: Piper and Pacer.     (END)
