CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON U.S. 17 BRIDGE IN FAUQUIER CO.
Bridge over Norfolk-Southern Railway will be reconstructed to current standards
CULPEPER — Work begins tomorrow on rehabilitation of the southbound U.S. 17 (Marsh Road) bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railway and Route 805 (Bealeton Road). The project contractor is Caton Construction Group Inc., of Charlottesville, which was awarded the $4,996,954 contract. The project’s fixed completion date is Dec. 8, 2022.
During construction the contractor will maintain one lane of traffic across the southbound bridge. During construction a walking trail under the bridge will be closed. Information about the timing of the closure will be communicated once the project begins.
The existing bridge was built in 1948 and does not meet current design standards. The project will replace the bridge superstructure, including the deck and railings. The existing abutments, piers and roadway approaches will be widened to accommodate the widened superstructure.
The rehabilitated bridge will have two 12-foot wide travel lanes with improved shoulders; the deck will be 38 feet wide from rail to rail.
Current traffic conditions and other real-time travel information can be found on the 511 Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia. VDOT updates are also on Facebook and the district’s Twitter account, @VaDOTCulp.
