FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation crews are making progress improving road conditions on Interstate 95, primary and high-volume secondary roads, and as weather conditions permit, plows have begun making initial passes into residential areas.

Road conditions vary substantially across the 14-county district. Around 5 inches of snow has accumulated in the Fredericksburg area, with lower snowfall amounts along the eastern Northern Neck and in the western Middle Peninsula. Roads are currently wet but clear in Gloucester and Mathews counties.

Motorists in affected areas should continue to delay travel until after the storm has ended.

Additional snow and mixed precipitation is forecast to fall this afternoon and evening, which will limit visibility and make travel hazardous.

Fredericksburg Area

Crews are concentrating on improving conditions on I-95, primary roads and high-volume secondary roads, which are in moderate condition with open travel lanes but partial areas of snow coverage. Crews are focused on treating roads and removing slush and snow from shoulders, turn lanes, crossovers and intersections.

Subdivision and low-volume secondary roads are in severe condition and are mostly snow-covered. However, crews are starting to make initial passes into subdivisions and along low-volume secondary roads. These initial passes may not reach each street in a neighborhood, but will provide an 8 ft. to 10 ft. wide path into a neighborhood to assist with emergency access. When conditions have improved on priority routes, VDOT crews will return to plow all state-maintained roads in these areas.

Northern Neck

Primary roads in the Northern Neck are in minor to moderate condition, with open travel lanes and isolated areas of snow or snow partially covering travel lanes. Secondary roads are in moderate to severe condition, with partial to complete snow coverage.

Middle Peninsula

Roads in Essex, Middlesex, King and Queen and King William counties are in minor condition, with visible pavement and isolated areas of snow and slush.

What Residents Should Know

• Motorists should continue to delay travel in locations where roads have been affected by the winter storm.
• VDOT’s emergency response will continue 24 hours a day. Crews will work in 12-hour rotating shifts until all state-maintained roads are passable and safe for travel.
• Currently, around 750 trucks are available and engaged to apply treatment materials and plow roads as part of the emergency response in the Fredericksburg District.
• Our goal is to have all roads passable 48 hours after the storm’s end. With snowfall ending late Sunday, this means VDOT will strive to have all roads plowed and passable by Tuesday evening.
• Shoveling a driveway today? Remember to shovel to the right while facing the street. This will reduce the amount of double work that may be required after a snowplow makes a pass along your street.

VDOT’s online snowplow tracker at vdotplows.org has been activated in Fredericksburg District where 2 inches of snow has accumulated.

Residents can enter their address to see the status of snow plowing in their neighborhood.
