VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.  –  Route 646 (Fork Bridge Road) in Caroline County has re-opened to traffic after the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) bridge crew completed installation of a new bridge over Maracossic Creek.

The bridge is located between Mattaponi Trail and Sorrell Lane. 

VDOT closed Fork Bridge Road in early September 2019. 

The nearly seven-mile detour has been lifted after crews replaced the 1967 structurally deficient bridge. 

The new structure is a 55-foot long concrete single slab bridge with new concrete abutments compared to the former 41-foot long steel beam structure with a timber deck. 

The prior bridge had a weight restriction of 3 tons for all vehicle types. 

Following final inspection, the weight limit posting has been removed. 

Fork Bridge Road carries an average of 20 vehicles a day, according to a 2018 VDOT traffic count.
