FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 617 (Exol Road) in King and Queen County reopened to traffic this evening as crews completed installation of a new bridge over Exol Swamp.

The $2.5 million project, funded by the State of Good Repair program, was completed on time. Exol Road closed to through traffic on March 30, 2020, and traffic was detoured during construction as crews replaced the bridge.

The new, two-span concrete slab structure has concrete piles and abutments. It is 75 feet long and 24 feet wide.

The previous timber bridge, built in 1965, was structurally deficient. 

An average of 60 vehicles a day cross the bridge, according to a VDOT traffic count. 

In August 2017, VDOT installed a temporary structure, known as a Bailey Bridge, over Exol Swamp. This temporary structure supports structurally deficient bridges. The Bailey Bridge allowed the road to remain open to traffic until the bridge replacement project started. The temporary bridge was removed to allow construction to begin on the permanent replacement. 

The project contractor was Corman Kokosing Construction.
