UPDATE (Dec. 9, 2021): A scheduled, routine inspection of Downing Bridge is complete. All lanes of Route 360 over the Rappahannock River will be open on Thursday and Friday evening between Essex and Richmond counties.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Travelers can expect overnight delays crossing the Downing Bridge in the Tappahannock area on the evenings of Tuesday, Dec. 7 through Friday, Dec. 10, as crews finish a bridge maintenance project.

On these evenings, Route 360 will be reduced to a single travel lane, with one-way, alternating traffic, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. nightly.

The Downing Bridge carries Route 360 over the Rappahannock River between Richmond and Essex counties.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and contractor crews will be conducting a final inspection of recent maintenance work on Downing Bridge.

Concrete repairs to the bridge deck and bridge joints were made to help to protect the bridge structure from deterioration, and also provide a smoother ride for motorists.

Work may only need to occur during one evening, out of the scheduled four nights. Motorists can find real-time information on lane closures on the Downing Bridge on 511Virginia.
