ROUTE 653 (CARYS BRIDGE ROAD) REDUCED TO SINGLE LANE DURING CULVERT WORK IN SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY
Temporary signals installed to alternate each direction of traffic starting as early as Oct. 30

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY – Beginning as early as Oct. 30, a continuous lane closure is scheduled to begin on Route 653 (Carys Bridge Road), approximately one mile north of the Route 609 (Popes Station Road) intersection, while crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) perform culvert restoration.

This work, necessary to extend the lifespan of the existing culvert, will require a continuous southbound lane closure on Route 653, reducing the roadway to one shared lane for both directions of traffic. Temporary traffic signals will be in place alternating Route 653 traffic in each direction for the duration of the closure, estimated to be in place for approximately one month. Access to all existing private property and business entrances within the work zone will be maintained at all times.

This construction work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change.

Motorists are advised to plan their commute by using VDOT’s free traffic information tools:

  • Download the 511 Virginia app or 511-integrated Waze app.
  • Visit the 511 Virginia website or dial 511 for traffic information on your phone.
