CREWS TREATING SLICK SPOTS FROM WEDNESDAY NIGHT STORM, PLANNING FOR THE WEEKEND
Drivers should continue to use caution on wet pavement

SOUTH CHESTERFIELD, Va. – Following Wednesday night’s winter weather event, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Richmond District crews continue their patrol to reduce slick spots and address accumulation.

Interstate routes are clear in the 14-county Richmond District, but crews continue to monitor and treat icy patches with salt and sand. Primary and secondary routes in southern counties of the district are in minor condition, meaning that pavement is bare except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush. Crews are treating primary routes and will follow up with neighborhood routes.Minor road conditions on a neighborhood (secondary) route near the Brunswick/Dinwiddie county line

“Higher pavement temperatures have been in our favor for this storm,” said Richmond District Maintenance Engineer Sean Nelson. “Much of the precipitation melted on contact, especially on interstate routes, giving us the opportunity to focus closely on ice, rather than accumulating snow.”

Looking to Thursday evening, drivers should continue using extra caution on wet pavement. Continued cold temperatures could mean more slick spots overnight, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Weekend storm threat

VDOT is on the lookout for an additional winter weather threat Sunday leading into Monday. Richmond District teams are monitoring forecasts and planning a course of action.
