STAUNTON – (6 a.m.) There’s not much to love about the road conditions on Valentine’s Day in parts of the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. Saturday’s wintry mix and overnight freezing have combined to create slick spots throughout the region, particularly on secondary roads. The Virginia Department of Transportation urges motorists to use great caution if they must drive Sunday morning.

VDOT crews continue to treat roadways as needed throughout the 11-county Staunton District. Here are the road conditions as of 6 a.m. Sunday:

Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Minor conditions in Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta and Rockingham counties.

Primary roads – Minor conditions in Shenandoah, Frederick and Clarke counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page and Warren counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Shenandoah and Warren counties. Minor conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Frederick and Clarke counties. Clear conditions in Highland County.

Road condition definitions:
Severe – drifting or partially blocked road.
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
