ROAD CONDITIONS IMPROVING IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY

STAUNTON – (11:30 a.m.) Driving conditions have steadily improved in the Shenandoah Valley following a winter storm that brought freezing rain and sleet beginning Monday evening. Employees and contractors of the Virginia Department of Transportation continue treating roads throughout the 11-county VDOT Staunton District Tuesday morning. Motorists are advised to use caution until temperatures are well above freezing.

Here are the road conditions as of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday:

Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.

Interstate 81 – Minor conditions in Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta and Rockingham counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Highland and Frederick counties. Minor conditions in Bath, Shenandoah and Clarke counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Page and Warren counties.

Secondary roads – Moderate to minor conditions in Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Minor conditions in Bath, Highland, Rockingham, Page, Clarke and Warren counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

For winter weather road conditions go to http://www.511Virginia.org, look at the orange bar on the top of the page and click on “Text Views” and then click on “Road Condition Table”. Look at the pull down box that lists all jurisdictions.  In this box individual counties can be chosen to view.

Road condition definitions:

Severe – drifting or partially blocked road. 

Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway. 

Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
